Atheism, the idea believed by atheists, is essentially the belief that there are no deities or gods and have no religion in their life. It can also be defined, in much more broad terms, as the rejection of any belief of deities. While the exact definition of atheism is widely debated, there are several levels of atheism, giving different meanings to the word. By the broadest of standards, atheism refers to the absence of any belief in gods or deities. This modern definition of Atheism originated in the 18th century. The word “atheism” arose from the Greek word atheos, meaning “without gods”. This was a negative word applied to those individuals who did not believe or worship gods of any kind that the larger society as a whole believed in. The eventual rise of free thought, skepticism, and criticism of religions led to a more widespread belief in atheism.
The internet has been a major forum for people to discuss their views freely, without the threat of prosecution or harm. The biggest trend to emerge from the internet are what are called “blogs”. The term “blog” is a combination of the words “web” and “log”. It is a website that is maintained and written by an individual who gives commentary, information, descriptions, and other relevant material. Blogs are generally themed, but can sometimes range in the topics that the author discusses. There has been a surge in the number of blogs that are listed on the internet and millions of them range from a number of topics, including women’s health, cars, and new electronic gadgets. Of course, there are blogs pertaining to religious views as well, and atheism has taken a cue from the blog revolution to exercise their freedom of speech without the threat of harm. Below are a list of atheist blogs widely read by atheists surfing the internet:
Debunking Christianity:
A controversial atheist blog run by a master of Philosophy of Religion named John W. Loftus. He earned a Th.M. degree at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School in 1985. He also wrote Why I Became an Atheist. His posts pertain to his position in the atheist realm of belief and he explains why Christianity promotes a delusional way of thinking.
Rationally Speaking:
An atheist blog with several intelligent posts about the ideas of atheism, recommending books about atheism and occasionally linking readers to interesting articles found on the internet, both amusing and informative.
Church of Flying Spaghetti Monster:
An atheist blog with a humorous title to demonstrate the ludicrous nature of religious ideals and beliefs. The blog is generally based on the sarcastic religion created to battle the views of Christianity and even being recognized as a real religion by the church. They believe that “Intelligent Design is not science, but rather a pseudoscience manufactured by Christians to push Creationism into public schools. These people are mistaken.”
